NIH (not invented here) [June 2019]

A take away from a paper [1] discussed at X HEC R&D Management Conference 2019 [2].

From a research at 500 Europe-based companies, the paper shows that the four least adopted open innovation practices are :
  • IP In-licensing
  • IP Out-licensing
  • Crowdsourcing
  • Selling unused technologies.
These practices could be gathered under the Proudly Found Elsewhere (PFE) posture, the opposite of NIH (Not Invented Here) posture  :
  • what should a CEO pay to tap into creations / inventions from third parties while engaging in-house top design and research teams ?
  • why should a CEO give away the immaterial assets accounted in the book but left unproductive ?
